The 1% Club viewers were left fuming after the final question on Lee Mack’s ITV gameshow sparked debate, with many calling it a ‘dodgy’ trick question

Viewers of The 1% Club vented their anger after slamming the final question on Saturday’s episode as “dodgy”.

The ITV quiz show is fronted by sharp-tongued comic Lee Mack, 57, and challenges 100 contestants with progressively harder questions, seeking to identify the brightest 1% capable of solving the final puzzle within just 30 seconds.

The format begins simply, with 90% of the public expected to answer the opening question correctly, but the difficulty rockets skywards near the conclusion, leaving only genuine brainiacs to attempt the ultimate 1% test for a chance to bag the top prize of up to £100,000.

During Saturday’s show (January 31), sole finalist Amena could have walked away with £10k in prize money for making it into the final round.

Yet Amena opted to risk her winnings in pursuit of the £93,000 jackpot, but it was the final 1% question that sparked fierce controversy among viewers at home, reports the Mirror.

The question showed an image of three identical books positioned neatly alongside one another, asking: “In the image below, three volumes of a cookery book series are lined up in order, next to each other on a shelf.

“The total thickness of the pages of each volume is 5cm, and each cover is 5mm thick. What is the distance in centimetres between the first page of volume one and the last page of volume three?”

Amena gave her answer as 14.9cm, which was wrong; the correct response was 7.

Breaking down the solution, Lee explained: “When stored upright, the first page of a book is on the right, and the page is on the left, so you only need to measure the pages of one book and four covers.”

Viewers were left utterly baffled by the brain teaser and immediately flocked to social media, with one person posting: “That was a bloody dodgy last question #The1PercentClub.”

Another declared: “That 1% Q makes no sense whatsoever #The1PercentClub”, whilst a third added: “#The1PercentClub this is a classic trick question!”.

“That was a proper stinker”, remarked one frustrated viewer, as another wrote: “Gonna need the workings for this one!”.

Meanwhile, one person disputed the solution and argued: “The answer is 5.2 cm (1 book at 5cm) (4 covers at 5mm / 0.05cm equalling 0.2cm)”, whilst another queried: “Hold on why isn’t it 17? Someone explain.”

The 1% Club airs on Saturdays on ITV and ITVX
