In the days before they tragically took their own lives, members of the Heaven’s Gate cult recorded a series of eerie goodbye messages which would go on to shock the world
In the chilling moments before they tragically ended their own lives, numerous members of the Heaven’s Gate cult calmly faced cameras and recorded a series of haunting farewell messages that would later stun the world.
Most spoke without any discernible fear or hesitation. In fact, some even smiled as they delivered their messages, expressing gratitude to their leaders and eagerly discussing what they believed was to come.
Heaven’s Gate was a cult established in the 1970s by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, who convinced their followers that they were spiritual entities sent to guide others towards a higher plane of existence.
The group came to believe that their human bodies were merely temporary “vehicles” and that death was a means of departing Earth.
By the 1990s, the cult had developed an obsession with the Hale–Bopp comet. Applewhite worked tirelessly to persuade his devoted followers that a spacecraft was trailing behind it, ready to collect them and transport them to a superior world, reports the Mirror.
On 26 March 1997, police entered a rented property in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and made a horrifying discovery.
Inside, they found the bodies of 39 people, neatly arranged in beds. They were all dressed identically in dark clothing and Nike trainers, with purple cloths covering their faces.
Investigators later determined that the deaths occurred in stages over several days, and that those who remained alive cleaned the house and meticulously positioned the bodies of the deceased before taking their own lives.
Before the tragic end, numerous members were urged by their leader to film haunting final video messages.
The youngest victim, a former US Army soldier in his mid-20s, expressed his gratitude to the group for providing meaning to his existence.
Speaking to the camera, the unnamed man in his twenties said: “I just want to say how thankful I am to Do and Ti ( the names Applewhite and Nettles would go by) for helping me and taking me under their wing.
“I feel very fortunate to be here. My classmates have been wonderful to me, and I’m very happy about what’s happening.”
The eldest victim, a 71-year-old grandmother, revealed her final thoughts were consumed with joy and amazement.
Additional members characterised the day as blissful, whilst several proclaimed it the most euphoric moment of their existence.
Applewhite’s own farewell message was arguably the most chilling of all.
He told his disciples that mass suicide represented the sole method to “evacuate” Earth and cautioned that anyone remaining would forfeit their opportunity to advance.
