Telly chef Gordon Ramsay has opened up about the hell his late dad put him through in a tell-all documentary about his life, now airing on Netflix
Gordon Ramsay admits the misery his dad put him through makes him want to be a better parent. The TV chef had a tough childhood thanks to abusive alcoholic Gordon Snr and he doesn’t want to follow in his footsteps.
He said: “I sadly had a torrid relationship with my father. I couldn’t wait to spend time out of the house away from him. I had to sit there at weekends and almost watch him ruin his life through alcohol.
“It’s hard when someone’s an alcoholic. In many ways I’m using that awful relationship to become a better dad.”
Gordon is desperate to be a great dad to his six kids and recently welcomed Olympian Adam Peaty as a son-in-law.
But he fears he has been a let-down for the older ones, Holly, Jack, Megan and Tilly.
He said: “I absolutely adore the kids. There’s part of that love and affection that has built up through guilt. The older ones have made it clear and say ‘Can we see you more?’ and ‘Dad, we miss you’. That’s hard.
“I feel I could have been there a bit more.”
Gordon is determined to do a better job with younger ones Oscar and Jesse.
He added: “I’ve got more of a mindset to become a better dad. I wasn’t a s*** dad the first time round, I just wasn’t there that much.
“I think I’ll make more time for Oscar and Jessie because I don’t want them to say, ‘You weren’t there for my first day at school’.”
Gordon works around the clock keeping his global empire going, which makes it hard to spend time with his family. It includes restaurants on multiple continents and a raft of TV formats.
He said: “Everyone thinks travelling is glamorous. But it’s super full on.
“Being away from home is tough. I want that time to go as quickly as possible. It’s the little ones I miss. I get used to them. It’s hard. I miss them terribly.”
