A number of school children were rushed to hospital following injuries involving pepper spray. The “mass casualty incident” occurred at a primary school in Germany in the town of Hürth, in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis district.
Eight ambulances and five emergency doctors arrived at the scene where emergency workers examined a total of 49 children. According to Mirror reports, 19 children were found to have suffered injuries in the incident involving tear gas.
Twelve were rushed to hospital for further treatment. The fire department declared a mass casualty incident, which unfolded after unknown individuals sprayed pepper spray in a primary school, German media reported.
The building had to be evacuated as fire crews escorted children and staff to safety. According to the fire department, the alarm was triggered at approximately 10:20am.
Eight ambulances responded to the school and five emergency physicians were on scene. The 49 children examined complained of symptoms including dizziness, eye irritation, or coughing.
In all, 19 were ultimately classified as injured, however seven were treated on site and released into the care of their parents; the others had to be taken to the hospital.
Police cordoned off the area and have taken over the investigation.
