Eric Dane promised to fight for ALS awareness in a heartbreaking final interview months before his death at 53, calling the disease ‘something so horrible’
Eric Dane made a powerful promise in his final months – vowing to raise awareness and push for change in the fight against ALS before the disease tragically claimed his life at 53. The former Grey’s Anatomy star died on Thursday (February 19) following a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, less than a year after going public with his diagnosis.
In a moving virtual appearance for I AM ALS and Synapticure on Giving Tuesday in December 2025, the actor spoke candidly about living with the condition and using his platform to make a difference.
“I make sure that people are aware of what ALS is and what it’s about, and more importantly, what we can do to combat it and improve the landscape,” Eric said.

“Because it’s so rocky and littered with hurdles and bureaucracy and all this other nonsense that we’re trying to sift through so we can get to a place where we go, start working on solution.”
Despite facing unimaginable physical decline, Dane remained remarkably resilient.
He described ALS as “something so horrible” but said it had been “very encouraging” that his spirit stayed “buoyant in the face of something so horrible.”
Opening up about his mindset, he admitted: “I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day, I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying.”
However, he surprised himself with his strength. “I was a little bit pleasantly surprised when I realised that I wasn’t built like that, because I thought for sure that was gonna be me,” he revealed.
Just months before his passing, Dane had also spoken to ABC News about losing function in his right arm and fearing further deterioration, describing the progression as “sobering.”
His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, saying: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.”
Beyond his acting roles, including his work on Brilliant Minds, Dane’s final legacy became one of advocacy – determined to shine a light on the devastating disease and help pave the way toward a cure.
