A married man tracked down his biological mother after 30 years apart, but their reunion spiralled into a controversial relationship that saw him leave his wife

A married man who spent the first three decades of his life oblivious to his biological roots left his family gobsmacked by abandoning his wife to embark on a sexual relationship with the mum who had given him up at birth.

Kim West was just 19-years-old and studying in California when she gave birth to her son Ben. Battling both financially and mentally she couldn’t rear him alone, and so arranged his adoption after a week before returning to her home in the UK.

For over three decades, they had no contact, though that all transformed in 2013.

Ben, who was now married and living in Colorado, chose to hunt for his biological parents, ultimately locating Kim and posting her a letter.

What started as tentative emails and telephone conversations rapidly intensified and by 2014, they had organised to meet in person.

It was a reunion that would descend into something few could fathom, reports the Mirror.

According to both parties, the bond was immediate and powerful, and within days of meeting, their relationship turned sexual.

The consequences arrived almost instantly.

Ben subsequently confessed that after becoming entangled with his mother, he revealed something to his wife Victoria that left her stunned – he could no longer be intimate with her unless he pictured she was his mother.

Kim, looking back on the initial period, characterised the mood in the household as tense. She said Victoria was courteous but aloof, and that envy rapidly emerged.

“(Victoria) was welcoming, yet I couldn’t warm to her,” Kim revealed. “I felt a growing sense of competition and when Ben touched her I felt jealous.”

She alleged that Victoria grew increasingly uneasy about the amount of time Ben was devoting to his biological mother.

“She would constantly ring him when we were together,” Kim disclosed. “Eventually, he confessed she was giving him a hard time about spending time with me. ‘She calls you mummy girlfriend,’ he said.”

Just days after the affair started, Ben told everything to his wife. Shortly after, he left the marriage and relocated to Michigan to live with Kim.

When their relationship came into the public eye, it ignited a storm of controversy. Under Michigan law, consensual incest between adults is a grave criminal offence, carrying potential jail time and compulsory registration as sex offenders.

Despite the uproar, the couple dismissed the incest label. They instead characterised their connection as “Genetic Sexual Attraction”, citing a contentious theory not recognised by most psychologists that suggests close relatives who meet for the first time as adults experience intense attraction due to missing early-life bonding.
