Evil child killer Ian Huntley was allegedly battered with a metal spike in jail – his mum, Lynda Richards, travelled to see him in hospital and said he was ‘unrecognisable’

The mum of Ian Huntley told pals that she hopes her son dies after the Soham child murderer was brutally attacked in prison.

Lynda Richards, 71, travelled 175 miles to sit by the evil killer’s bedside after he’d had surgery. The sicko has “only a 5% chance of survival” after he was ambushed by another lag at HMP Frankland, Durham, on Thursday (February 26) morning.

His mum said she “just wants to be free of it” and is fully aware “flags will fly high” if he dies but she is “still his mother”. However, she reportedly told her mates: “Part of me hopes he passes away this time”.

Cops said earlier that the 52-year-old remained in a serious condition in hospital 24 hours after he was attacked with a spiked metal bar in the workshop of a maximum-security jail. According to reports, triple killer Anthony Russell allegedly shouted “I’ve done it, I’ve done it” after Huntley was repeatedly smashed over the head with a spiked metal bar.

Lynda is said to be shocked by the extent of her son’s injuries, which include brain damage and a broken jaw. He is thought to be on a life support machine and being kept alive with the help of a ventilator.

A source told The Sun: “Lynda couldn’t recognise her own son when she saw him in the hospital, his injuries are that extensive. She’s understandably torn by what has happened but it was a harrowing experience for her. He’s been attacked on so many occasions and she now thinks it might be better if he didn’t pull through.

“It’s an extraordinarily difficult thing for her to come to terms with. Part of her just hopes he passes away this time. But he’s still her son, regardless of what happened, and they have remained very close.” Durham Constabulary said: “There has been no change in the 52-year-old man’s condition overnight – he remains in hospital in a serious condition.”

Huntley – who is serving two life terms for the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, both just 10, in 2002 – was found lying in a pool of blood after being beaten close to death.

The double child killer was hated in prison because of his horrific crimes and his arrogance and there was a string of hardened cons desperate to get their hands on him. Inmates are said to have despised Huntley over his antics, including the sick footie shirt stunt.

Prisoners are barred from wearing replica shirts of teams they follow, as they can cause conflict, but it was reported Huntley had bought one “as close to a Man United top as possible” and had been “strutting about” the prison wearing it.

A prison source told The Sun it was “only a matter of time” Huntley was attacked, adding: “If it had not been Anthony Russell, it would have been someone else. But people are still amazed that Russell was able to get to him and do this.

“Huntley would have three or four officers with him most of the time because he was such a target. It was no secret that loads of inmates wanted to get to him and that is why he was guarded so closely.”
