The Scream movies were inspired by the real life crimes of Danny Rolling, who murdered five students in Gainesville, Florida, in 1990, decapitating some of his victims

Chillingly, the hammed up screams of a 1997 Neve Campbell in the original Scream aren’t far removed from the nightmare which struck a small Florida town earlier that decade.

The actual offences were far more barbaric and featured a severed head, bite marks and a propped up headless corpse. In 1994, screenwriter Kevin Williamson became fixated on the terror unleashed on Gainesville when five university students were slaughtered in merely three days during the summer of 1990.

This served as the inspiration for Sydney and the masked murderer, who in reality was a disturbed and damaged individual named Danny Rolling. Rolling’s series of atrocities formed the foundation for one of the most lucrative and genre-defying franchises in horror.

Born in 1954 to a teenage mum, Rolling endured a dreadful childhood. His dad, James, was a distinguished Korean war veteran who probably battled post-traumatic stress disorder.

He was brutal and violent towards his wife Claudia and domineering over Rolling and his younger sibling Kevin. This psychological torment escalated to physical violence as the lads matured, reports the Mirror US.

Rolling’s sole comfort was a guitar he received as a gift for his 15th birthday. Rolling sought refuge in art and music for comfort – his Christmas present of a guitar at age 15 became one of his most treasured memories from his teenage years.

In his memoir The Making Of A Serial Killer: The Real Story of the Gainesville Student Murders, Rolling revealed his early teenage years were when he developed multiple personalities as a “defence” against his father.

After enlisting in the airforce at 18 he was discharged in 1972, caught in possession of drugs. Rolling moved in with his grandfather and briefly discovered comfort in the church.

He then wed O’Mather Halko, and they had a daughter. Tragically, Rolling soon began displaying the same violent tendencies as his father and O’Mather escaped with his child.

Rolling’s criminal activities started with voyeurism and intensified when he sexually assaulted a woman. He then conducted a series of armed robberies that resulted in his imprisonment in Jackson, Georgia, in 1979.

This marked the start of his repeated spells behind bars throughout the 1980s. He maintained his pattern of sexual assault and robberies during this period.

In November 1989, Rolling lost his restaurant job. That very evening he committed his first murder which would preview the terrifying crimes that would later inspire the original Scream film.

He killed Julie Grissom, 24, her nephew Sean, eight, and Julie’s father Tom, 55. Disturbingly, Julie was discovered with bite marks and her body positioned with her legs spread on the bed.

This was hauntingly similar to how his subsequent victims were discovered.

In May 1990, Rolling confronted his father, drew a gun and shot James in the stomach and head. Remarkably James survived but lost use of his eye and ear.

Rolling then made his escape to Gainesville.

He set up camp in the woods behind the University of Florida, where he devised his plan. His first victims were freshmen Christina Powell and Sonja Larson, who he savagely stabbed and raped on 24 August 1990.

On 25 August, Santa Fe Community College student Christa Hoyt, 18, became his third victim. In a horrifying act, he left her severed head on a shelf and her body sitting upright on her bed.

Three days later, Rolling targeted two University of Florida students, Manuel Toboada and Tracy Paules, both 23.

Rolling fled, leaving the community shocked and confused. Police wrongly identified a former college student as a prime suspect, whilst Rolling was actually incarcerated in a Florida jail.

After his murder spree, Rolling committed an armed robbery of a Winn-Dixie grocery and was arrested after crashing his car.

In 1991, police finally linked Rolling to the murders using DNA from the crime scene and matching it to a tooth extracted from the then 37 year old. Over a decade after his first crime, he was formally charged with the murders of the five Gainesville students in June 1992.

At this point, Rolling began communicating with Sondra London, who he later proposed to and who helped him write his memoir.

Rolling pleaded not guilty but used his fellow inmate Bobby Lewis as his “mouthpiece” to confess to the murders. In 1994, just before his trial began, Rolling changed his plea to guilty.

His mother detailed the torment he endured and remembered one of his personalities, “Gemini,” which led him to commit his most brutal deeds. Two psychiatrists concurred that Rolling had a severe and significant personality disorder, but conceded he was aware of his criminal actions.

In late March, the jury unanimously convicted Rolling of first-degree murder on all five charges, and he was sentenced to death a month later.

Rolling met his end at Florida State Prison on 25 October 2006. In a chilling turn of events, the witness box of 47 individuals heard a religious hymn in his final moments, with the lyrics “none greater than thee, O Lord, none greater than thee.”
