The Piper Malibu light aircraft came down in a built-up residential area in southern Brazil, killing the pilot and three passengers on board in a tragedy

A plane was seen ploughing into a restaurant and erupting in a fireball during a tragedy that claimed four lives. Fire crews have confirmed the pilot is amongst the fatalities along with three other passengers aboard the light aircraft, including a couple.

The devastating incident occurred just after 10.30am local time this morning as the Piper Malibu was making its approach to Capao da Canoa Airport in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The restaurant in a densely populated residential area remained shut at the time, otherwise the casualty count could have been significantly worse.

There were no immediate reports of any ground casualties, though the extraordinary footage of the crash revealed a pedestrian apparently fleeing for his life upon spotting the descending aircraft, while another couple were seen racing from the scene as they narrowly avoided being struck.

Video from the location captured flames shooting from the roof of the building the aircraft struck, with a dark column of smoke billowing high into the sky.

Local reports indicated it had struck a pole close to the runway’s end before going down.

It had departed from Sao Paulo.

Residents in nearby houses were moved to safety.

Rio Grande do Sul state governor Eduardo Leite posted on X: “I have been following, since the very first moments, together with the security forces, the full mobilisation in responding to the incident involving the crash of a small aircraft in Capao da Canoa, unfortunately with confirmed fatalities.

“The accident area has already been evacuated by Civil Defence.”

The terrifying plane crash took place less than 24 hours after four individuals lost their lives when a light aircraft plunged nose-first into a field near an industrial estate close to the city of Puebla in central Mexico.
