Arsenal were forced to settle for a point against Wolves in the Premier League with tensions boiling over at full-time

A post-match fracas erupted following the end of Arsenal’s Premier League encounter against Wolves at Molineux. The home side netted a stoppage-time leveller, and with emotions boiling over, both squads needed to be pulled apart at the final whistle.

The confrontation seemed to ignite after Gabriel Jesus pushed Yerson Mosquera to the turf with Mikel Arteta amongst those racing onto the field in a bid to prevent matters from worsening. The Brazil forward was promptly cautioned for his actions with several other Arsenal stars hurrying across to remove him from the fracas.

Riccardo Calafiori was the player initially on hand who extracted Jesus from the agitated Wolves contingent, with the Italy defender having been powerless to prevent Tom Edozie’s strike on the goalline.

He had come on for the injured Leandro Trossard with moments remaining and despite appearing to have thwarted Tom Edozie’s attempt on the line, the ball cannoned off the upright and rebounded off him before finding the net.

Hugo Bueno had reduced the arrears earlier in the contest with strikes from Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie originally placing Mikel Arteta’s team in commanding charge.

The former was also compelled to withdraw with a possible concern ahead of the North London Derby against Tottenham, that will trouble Arteta.

Arsenal are now five points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League standings, but the title is no longer within their control. That’s because if Pep Guardiola’s outfit triumph in all their remaining fixtures, they would claim the title.

City’s match in hand over the Gunners is against Crystal Palace and with Arsenal still to travel to the Etihad Stadium, the side currently occupying second spot could now be favourites for silverware and that appears to be Paul Merson’s view.

Following the stalemate, he remarked on Sky Sports: “If Man City win all their games now on, they win the league. It’s disappointing. You can’t play in second gear. When Wolves went to 2-2, there was an urgency.

“They didn’t have that before. You can’t play like that. Every game is a cup final to the end. You’ve got to play at a high tempo.

“If Arsenal play at a high tempo, Wolves can’t live with them. But to play the way they played, and it’s slow and lazy, and they are giving the ball away, then Wolves are always going to be in the game.

“That could come back to bite them. That is really, really disappointing tonight.”

It marks the second successive midweek where Arsenal have surrendered points with a 1-1 stalemate against Brentford arriving six days previously.
