Onlookers shrieked “My God!” after a funeral home was hit by flash floods that carried the caskets through the heart of a submerged town

Coffins float down road during flash flood

A flash flood left onlookers gasping in disbelief when they spotted dozens of coffins floated past them.

The caskets were filmed been carried past submerged traffic lights in the centre of a small town. Two women are heard repeatedly shrieking “My god!” as the boxes drifted past them on the rapidly flowing muddied water. The coffins were spotted being transported down the waterlogged streets after a funeral parlour was swamped.

Seven people have perished due to the severe weather in the municipality of Ub in Minas Gerais, Brazil where the funeral home was deluged. Torrential storms have pummelled the area since Monday.

At least 29 residents have lost their lives across Minas Gerais whilst 45 remain unaccounted for.

Twenty-two people perished in the region’s city of Juiz de Fora, situated north of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Flash flooding has demolished houses and commercial premises, carried away vehicles, submerged medical facilities and left widespread devastation.

Officials declared a state of emergency and shuttered local schools and nurseries.

A representative for Ub City Hall said: “Families have lost everything.

“Homes, stories, memories: lives were shaken in just a few hours.

“Now, more than ever, our city needs the strength of its people.”

They continued: “Teams from the Fire Department, Municipal Guard, and the Municipal Civil Defence Coordination have been working since the early hours of the morning, surveying the flooded locations, working on emergency solutions, and monitoring the affected areas.

“Teams are already working to restore services as quickly as possible.”
