Manchester United are preparing for another busy summer transfer window with four key signings planned including Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton

With Manchester United soaring high, fans can scarcely be criticised for wanting to relish the moment. But as the summer transfer window begins to loom large, focus will inevitably start shifting towards what lies ahead.

Last summer witnessed a major revamp of the attacking line, with Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arriving in deals worth just over £180million combined. The campaign prior saw the spotlight fall on defensive reinforcements, as Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui signed.

And as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s squad transformation moves into its third stage, here are the latest Manchester United headlines.

Manchester United’s chase of Elliot Anderson may have already encountered an obstacle, with England icon Chris Waddle suggesting the midfielder would prefer a return to Newcastle rather than a move to Old Trafford, reports the Mirror.

Anderson made the move to Nottingham Forest from Newcastle in 2024 in a £35m transfer at a time when the Magpies were under pressure to balance their finances and meet PSR requirements.

It marked the end of a 14-year connection with his beloved club, having initially signed as a schoolboy. According to Waddle, though, the attraction of a return to Tyneside could prove crucial if the chance presents itself.

“Elliot Anderson is a Newcastle fan. He’s a Geordie… he won’t be in a rush but the chance of going back to Newcastle? I’m sure he’s always wanted to play in those black and white stripes and I’m sure he’ll be up for it,” Waddle, himself a Geordie former Newcastle star, said.

“But I think, again, there’ll be a lot of competition. There’ll be a lot of teams eyeing him up so you’d have a lot to pick from if he does decide to leave Forest. Newcastle may just swing it because he’s a Newcastle fan.”

Forest, for their part, are anticipated to demand a fee exceeding £100m in a bid to deter interest. But considering the 23-year-old’s development as one of the Premier League’s – and England’s – most dependable and steady midfielders this campaign, it wouldn’t be shocking if that price tag still generates genuine attention.

Four transfers lined up

Manchester United are gearing up for another hectic summer, with blueprints already in place to secure four crucial signings.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the club are eyeing two midfielders, a left back and a left-sided attacker as part of the next stage of their reconstruction.

Anderson remains their primary target in the middle of the park but Adam Wharton is also prominent on their radar, as is Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, who was pursued by United last summer.

Newcastle duo Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are also under consideration.

At left back, Myles Lewis-Skelly has emerged as a leading candidate. The England youngster has fallen down Arsenal’s pecking order this season and is regarded internally as a potential long-term replacement for Luke Shaw.

In attack, United are eager to bring in a player who can offer both pace down the flanks and a scoring threat. RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is amongst those being tracked, along with Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye.
