A man on trial for killing 6 people and injuring more than 320 in one of Germany’s most deadly terror attacks appeared to wink while presenting a bizarre poem to court.
Taleb al-Abdulmohsen allegedly drove a BMW into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany in December 2024. The horrific incident left five women and a nine-year-old dead while 320 more were injured.
The former psychiatrist was described as showing no remorse while in the stand, and instead used the 28th day of his trial to perform a weird poem about a former German minister and her appearance at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
The 51-year-old appeared to wink while waving an an A4 piece of paper containing the verse, while two psychiatric experts presented reports on the severe long-term consequences suffered by the victims.
The poem, addressed to former German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, was titled “Nancy the Snake”, and appeared to criticise the politician for her taking a stand against perceived homophobia in Qatar during the FIFA World Cup there, criticising her of “of morality only like a snake adorned with pearls.”
Faeser made headlines when she wore a rainbow armband while watching Germany v Japan, following several criticism of the competition and the host country’s LGBTQ+ laws.
The poem also appeared to request that Faeser visits al-Abdulmohsen in jail.
Translated from German, It reads: “Come to prison, Oh Nancy, come, come, defend me, come. What justice is this, to lock me up without clothes, not even sandals. We used to love the Germans, we thought their Interior Minister would care.”
Al-Abdulmohsen’s writing also made several references to various animals, which he seems to use as a metaphor for the relationship between the West and the Islamic world.
It reads: “The chameleon does not change its colours to teach us to distinguish the forbidden from the permitted…
“We were once bitten from the snake’s pit and found it in the answers to out questions / When we followed the West, obstacles rained down upon up with the weight of mountains.”
“When the raven chose a path for us, we knew it was nothing but a figment of the mind”.
Spectators to the bizarre performance were left baffled by al-Abdulmohsen’s writing, according to German news outlet BILD with Judges making several warnings telling him not to make statements unrelated to the case.
The papers were eventually confiscated.
Before his arrest following the Magdeburg terror attack, Al-Abdulmohsen had worked as a psychiatrist in a secure hospital in Germany, where he reportedly earnt the nickname Dr Google due to his reliance on internet searches while treating patients.
Al-Abdulmohsen is currently being held at Burg Prison in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
According to BILD, he is allowed to use a computer and access case files for his defence. The trial is set to continue on Thursday.
