Mohamed Salah was reduced to tears after the full-time whistle against Brentford as the Egyptian King waved goodbye to the Liverpool fans

Mohamed Salah was reduced to tears after the full-time whistle and his Liverpool career came to an end.

Salah announced he was leaving at the end of the season earlier in the year – but the Egyptian King still struggled to hold back his emotions as he soaked up the cheers from the Anfield faithful one final time.

He had been subbed off by Arne Slot in the final minutes, after bagging an assist to help Liverpool earn Champions League football next season. Salah was given a guard of honour from the Liverpool players as he was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong.

On his way off the pitch, Salah bent over and kissed the Anfield turf. And he was then embraced by Jordan Henderson after the full-time whistle.

CEO Billy Hogan made his way down to the pitch with Sir Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and sporting director Richard Hughes as another guard of honour was formed for Salah. And as the players left the pitch, Salah was left with Andy Robertson, who is also leaving.

Salah’s kids played football in front of the Kop, and they were soon joined by Robertson’s child. Salah made his way across to Reds icons Phil Thompson and Jason McAteer as Sky camera’s showed Liverpool fans in tears.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Salah said: “I think I cried more than in my whole life. I’m not really an emotional guy. We lived our youth here, sharing everything from the beginning to the end.

“We put this club back where it belongs. He (Robertson) is loved because he gives his all in the field. They love him for that.

“It’s tricky to leave Liverpool. He’s very important for the team and for that period of time we had. I’m really honoured to share a dressing room with him. He was there for the team. I am very blessed to share a dressing room with him.

“It’s life. I look back and wonder if I would have wanted more than I achieved. Not really. We won it all. We see the love from the fans and this is the most important thing for me.

“I will be far away from here. I will be emotional every time. I hope the team stays in the position, fighting for everything.”
