Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo has come out as a proudly gay man in a heartfelt Instagram statement, while his wife Fleur Shomo — whom he married in 2012 — offered her support despite describing it as a painful and disorienting time
Beartooth’s lead singer, Caleb Shomo, has publicly announced he is gay in a heartfelt statement shared with fans. His wife of nearly 14 years, Fleur Shomo, openly expressed her support despite describing this period as a “hurtful” and “disorienting” time for her.
The 33-year-old musician, who initially gained recognition with the metalcore band Attack Attack! before founding Beartooth, disclosed his sexuality in a frank Instagram post over the weekend. Caleb penned: “There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding my personal life as of late and I feel compelled to set the record straight before it affects those I love any further.
“I am a proudly gay man. This is something I’ve been unpacking and reckoning with in my life for quite some time now.” The rocker confessed that suppressing his sexuality for years had inflicted a significant emotional burden on him, and disclosed he spent much of the past decade attempting to dull his feelings.
“I spent a decade burying feelings with alcohol,” he elaborated, adding that giving up drinking enabled him to start exploring “why I felt this way for so long”.
Caleb went on: “It’s been a direct path to me reconciling with my sexuality in hopes that it will eventually lead to me experiencing self love.”
The musician also unveiled that his forthcoming music will mirror what he is undergoing in this new phase of his life, and assured fans he plans to express himself more candidly than ever before.
He wrote: “I will only do what makes me happy at the deepest level and what is the most honest depiction of who I am.” This admission represents a pivotal moment for the vocalist, whose music has delved into themes of self-loathing, mental health battles, and emotional chaos since 2014.
Beartooth’s 2023 album The Surface had already begun suggesting a more optimistic perspective from Caleb, featuring tracks like Might Love Myself, which centred on embracing self-worth following years of darkness.
Caleb previously told The Rolling Stone about the “very revolutionary time” in his life that inspired writing that record. He confessed he had spent years feeling insecure and fearful of influencing others due to his struggles.
At the time, he said: “I’ve been very, very insecure; I’ve been so fucked up and thought I should not be any sort of influence.” The songwriter continued: “I feel like with this, I’m very proud of what I have to say. I want people to hear it.”
Caleb’s wife Fleur, whom he wed in April 2012, has also posted her own heartfelt message online, acknowledging that recent months have been extraordinarily difficult.
“But I will always want to love, protect and support Caleb,” she wrote. “I have cared more about his well being over the years than anything else in the world.” The My Top 5 podcast co-host revealed she had observed Caleb’s “confusion and pain” during his battle with his sexuality, while simultaneously wrestling with how it affected her own existence.
She described the complex emotions she experienced following these discoveries, saying: “You never want anything more for your person than for them to just be ok.
“You also ask yourself constantly if you’re a bad person for wondering wtf this means for your world and the anger you also feel. To support him while losing everything has been incredibly hard to figure out.”
Despite the anguish she’s currently enduring, Fleur maintained that their relationship was authentic and brimming with love. She went on: “Our nearly 14 years of marriage was wonderful and full of so much fun, adventure and love. Nobody will know anything about our marriage like we do.
“And no one can ever truly know what depths of love exist between two people unless they are those people. I already miss it and my husband more than anything. Our story was a good one. And now it’s done.” The couple do not have children together.
Supporters have now inundated Fleur’s earlier Instagram posts featuring Caleb, enquiring about her wellbeing and offering messages of encouragement during this challenging period for both of them.
