Residents in the US state of South Carolina have been rocked after reports of a “big boom” being heard and houses shaking – some suspect an explosion or an earthquake has occurred

Dozens of people across South Carolina, United States, have taken to social media after hearing a “big boom” as some suspect an explosion may have occurred.

Locals from Lexington, Columbia, Midlands and other areas in the US state have been left shocked by the loud noise that left houses reportedly shaking today (May 28) at around 5:24pm local time.

People originally suspected it may have been an earthquake but the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has said nothing about activity in the area.

Footage shared online, seen by the Daily Star, captured the sound of the loud bang and the camera beginning to shake. The clip was shared online from a hanger at Hamilton-Owens Downtown Airport in Columbia.

One local wrote on X: “Loud boom heard through out the Midlands of South Carolina. You can hear the loud boom on my Nest camera! Crazy! Typically you can’t hear this kind of stuff. Insane this wasn’t an earthquake.”

Another wrote: “Woah, earthquake felt just now in SC, a loud boom and shook the building. Anyone else in the midlands??”

A third speculated: “Sounded so loud like it was in my back yard in West Columbia.”

A fourth shared: “I’m in Darlington right off Main Street and I heard a light boom and the house shook a little. I initially thought there was a bad wreck on Main Street until I noticed others on here mentioning they heard and felt something in Columbia!.”

A fifth said: “Big boom over head in Columbia, SC. I’m putting my money on a meteor entry then explosion due to the wide spread reports of hearing it.”

According to WACH FOX, they have heard from people feeling the boom from as far as North Augusta to Darlington County.

At the time of writing, there have been no confirmation over what caused the loud noise and “shockwave”, as some have speculated.

Locals online have continued to speculate with explosion, meteor or a sonic boom caused by a jet.
