The Kooks frontman Luke Prichard has opened up about his experience of fatherhood after he grew up without his own dad.
The singer/songwriter was just three years-old when his father died, and having sons Julian, 4, and Wesley, 2, filled a void he didn’t know was there before. As a result he’s trying to be a more present role model in their life, despite being a globe-trotting rock star.
Luke told the Daily Star: “I just love it, it’s the thing that I was missing my whole life, and I guess I didn’t know I was missing.
“I am quite silly with them, but I try to be a bit of a teacher, I’m trying to teach them already. It’s come very natural to me, I don’t know if it’s because of losing my dad maybe it makes it more of a revelation, I’m not sure but it’s great.”
Luke, who’s married to fellow singer Ellie Rose, involves his kids whenever he’s working and we may get a spin off band one day by the sounds of things.
He shared: “They’ve been in the studio a bit with me.
“I like to have a lot of fun with them, like when I get back they just think I’m silly and my songs are silly and it’s great. My favourite thing is they’re making up new lyrics to my songs.”
Unlike most kids they’re not growing up on Mr. Tumble and The Wiggles – the boys already have great taste in music.
Luke smiled: “My youngest Wesley, I’m so proud of him, he’s discovered T.Rex. So he likes Mark Bolan, and he actually thinks that it’s me, I think.
“Because I look a little bit like him maybe. There’s a song called Life’s A Gas, it’s quite a philosophical, really cool rock song and he’s obsessed with it, so that’s brilliant!
“And Julian likes a female a power pop more like Kim Petras he loves. They’re so young but so far they have great taste yeah.”
The Kooks are back on the festival circuit this year performing at Isle of Wight festival, Kendal Calling and Boardmasters and Luke is still excited to play the old hits.
He said: “My friends ask me a lot they’re like, ‘you must be so bored of playing Naive and Ooh La but it’s cool, it’s really cool, when you’ve got the crowd there and there’s people seeing it live for the first time there’s an energy there.”
And despite singing them for two decades plus, Luke admits he “still sometimes mucks up the words.”
