More than 40% of film fans say the James Cameron blockbuster about the cruise liner’s doomed maiden voyage made them shed a tear.
Film fans have voted Titanic as the all-time weepiest movie – beating classics like Casablanca and Gone with the Wind to the top spot.
The 1997 epic that remains the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time earning $2.2billion was overwhelmingly voted the most tear-jerking romantic movie, according to a new study.
Researchers for Freeview channel Great Romance quizzed film fans on the movies that made them cry – and the most recent movie in the top 10 was nearly two decades old.
Two-fifths (41%) of film fans say the James Cameron blockbuster about the cruise liner’s doomed maiden voyage made them shed a tear.
Nearly half (47%) of all women polled welled up during the film starring Leonard Di Caprio and Kate Winslet, while a third (34%) of men admitted they brushed their eyes.
The Notebook, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, came second on the list, voted for by a fifth (20%) of viewers – with women (26%) finding it more weepy than men (15%).
More than one in 10 (13%) Brits said the 1990 classic Ghost – starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore – had them reaching for the tissues more than any other movie.
Hollywood classics like Gone with the Wind (10%) and Casablanca (9%) came in fourth and fifth, proving silver screen epics can still move modern day movie fans.
Love, Actually (9%), Pretty Woman (8%), Notting Hill (6%), Dirty Dancing (6%) and P.S I Love You( 6%) all made the top 10 list of all-time weepiest movies.
The 2007 mush-fest P.S. I Love You – starring Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank – was the most modern movie in the top 10 – released 19 years ago.
On average, women were 50% more likely to shed a tear than men, according to the poll of 2,000 UK film fans, commissioned by Great Romance on Freeview channel 52.
Kate Gartland, Marketing Director at Great, said: “It’s a real shame there haven’t been any great weepies in such a long time – a great love story is a wonderful thing that lasts a lifetime.
“It is no surprise Titanic takes the top spot – and to us at Great Romance, it’s equally no surprise that movie fans clearly love classic story-telling. There’s no shortage of that on our channel.”
