Man Utd legend named as England’s World Cup opponents’ new manager

A Manchester United Champions League winner is set to equal a record for coaching teams at five consecutive World Cups after being named the new manager of England’s upcoming opponents

A former Manchester United legend is now looking to plot England’s downfall at this summer’s World Cup.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s one-time No.2 Carlos Queiroz has been named the new manager of Ghana. The Three Lions are set to take on the Black Stars in their second Group L match in Boston at Gillette Stadium on June 23.

The vastly experienced 73-year-old will become only the second coach in history to take charge of a team at five consecutive World Cups, having coached Iran at each of the last three World Cup finals, having taken Portugal to the last-16 stage in 2010.

Carlos Alberto Parreira hold the record for coaching at six different World Cups: 1982 (Kuwait), 1990 (UAE), 1994 (Brazil), 1998 (Saudi Arabia), 2006 (Brazil), and 2010 (South Africa). But only Bora Milutinovic has done it in five consecutive tournaments with Mexico (1986), Costa Rica (1990), the United States (1994), Nigeria (1998) and China (2002).

Quieroz replaces Otto Addo, who was sacked earlier this month after beating out fellow Portuguese coaches Fernando Santos and Paulo Bento to land the job.

Addo was given his marching orders after a run of four straight losses, including friendly defeats against Austria (5-1) and Germany (2-1), having failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year.

Queiroz’s first game in charge will be a friendly against World Cup co-hosts Mexico on May 22 before a final pre-tournament warm-up match against Craig Bellamy’s Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium on June 2.

Ghana will play their World Cup Group L opener against Panama in Toronto, Canada on June 17 before their hotly anticipated clash with England six days later.

Queiroz is best known by fans in England for his stint in the dugouat alongside Fergie where he had two stints, either side of a short spell as manager of Real Madrid.

The Portuguese coach first joined the Old Trafford coaching staff and helped guide Manchester United to a second Champions League success in 2008. He took on the role of assistant manager in June 2002, leaving to take charge at the Bernabeu Stadium the following summer.

Queiroz returned to United after being sacked by Real Madrid in May 2004, and helped guide the Red Devils to their second Champions League triumph in 2008, when they beat Chelsea in the final on penalties.

Since then, Queiroz has solely been associated with national teams as he quit Old Trafford to take charge of Portugal.

Ghana will be his ninth international side to coach, having also coached South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Egypt, and, most recently, Qatar and Oman, whom he left last month. Across his four previous World Cup appearances, Queiroz has coached 13 matches in the tournament, winning three, drawing four, and losing six.
