A bizarre funeral saw a wealthy family reprimanded by the authorities after they decided to bury their £120,000 luxury car alongside their dead father, who was reportedly an avid car lover
Bizarre images have emerged after a family buried a £120,000 Mercedes-Benz using a forklift during their father’s funeral.
The dad, who passed away in his seventies, was apparently an avid collector of luxury cars and so his children decided to bury him alongside one of his favourite models. The vehicle they chose was a flashy black Mercedes-Benz S450L, which costs around £120,000.
The car, which also bore a flashy specialised numberplate estimated to have set the car lover back nearly 30 grand, was decorated with a large red ribbon before being placed deep in the ground and covered in dirt. A large headstone can also be seen covered in the same red ribbon.
The plate bore the numbers 8888, which is highly sought after due to the number eight having connotations of wealth and good fortune in China.
A clip of the one-of-a-kind funeral, which was held in a village in China’s Liaoyang region, shows a group of locals holding shovels to help bury the car. The locals were reportedly gifted with a red envelope containing 500 yuan (£54), as well as a luxury banquet.
The funeral took place on April 9, and the following day, the local civil affairs bureau posted that the family had been punished for burying the car.
The family, who are believed to have the surname Yin, did not offer an explanation into the strange burial, although Chinese funeral traditions do sometimes involve the burning of objects or models of objects loved by the deceased.
They did, however, offer a public apology.
They are thought to have received a fine, and may have to pay the costs of excavating the car, as well as for site clearance and ecological restoration, according to the South China Morning Post.
Wang Peng, a lawyer at Beijing Fahuan Law Firm, told Chinese media that failing to complete proper scrapping procedures could lead to administrative penalties, even if the car was privately owned.
He explained, “If the number plate is forged, those involved may also face administrative detention.”
