The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service rushed to the incident at Feltham Young Offenders’ Institution but the 16-year-old was pronounced dead later in hospital

A teen prisoner has been found dead at a young offenders’ institution in London.

The 16-year-old boy was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Feltham Young Offenders’ Institution in south west London on Monday night. Members of staff at the prison called for emergency services including an ambulance and he was taken to hospital.

However, he was pronounced dead two hours later. Police are saying the death is being treated as “unexpected” at this stage and officers are now investigating. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Service said: “On Tuesday, 21 April at 00.05hrs, police were notified by staff at Feltham Prison and Young Offender Institute about the death of a boy who had been found unresponsive and later died in hospital.

“The London Ambulance Service were called at around 21.30hrs on Monday, 20 April and treated the boy, aged 16, before taking him to hospital. He sadly died at 23.43hrs. At this stage, the death is being treated as unexpected and enquiries remain ongoing.

“A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.”

The Youth Custody Service offered their condolences to the 16-year-old’s family.

A spokesman said: “We were saddened to hear of the death of a child from YOI Feltham, who died in hospital on Monday 20 April, and our thoughts are with their friends and family.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

Meanwhile, a British man charged with killing two women in a six-hour gun rampage in the US has been found dead in his prison cell. Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday night, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of authorities to save his life. The cause of death has not yet been established and an internal review has been launched, but officials say they do not currently suspect foul play.

It comes just days after he was charged for the murder of two women and suspected of killing a man in a series of unprovoked attacks during a rampage earlier this month in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prianna Weathers, 31, was shot dead outside a restaurant in Decatur around 1am on April 13. Around an hour later Tony Matthews, 48, was shot outside a supermarket just 12 miles away. He later died in hospital of his injuries.

Then before 7am that morning, Lauren Bullis, 40, was shot and stabbed to death while walking her dog in nearby Panthersville.

Tiffany Williams, who found Lauren lying at the end of her driveway, said she heard six or seven gunshots and saw a suspect standing over her before fleeing. Family members called her “such a special person”.
