Birmingham’s bin strike has gone on for way too long and been a blight upon the UK’s second city. Even though efforts to stop it now appear close to success – it remains a dark chapter in Brum history
It’s been a rubbish time for the people of Birmingham. But finally after a year of disputes, the city’s bin strike is close to coming to an end.
Residents – who have seen council tax soar after the city authority effectively went bust – have had to endure a year of industrial action.
It’s seen trash pile up – 21 tonnes of waste across the city last year – and left Birmingham an international laughing stock.
Finally it appears the council and the Unite union are bashing out a deal that will see increased certainty for workers, on salaries and pension contributions.

It’s long overdue. Taxpayers deserve better.
And we urge this to be sorted asap and for the bitter dispute to be thrown in the bin for good.
Moody an inspiration
Lewis Moody is one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen and he shocked the nation when he revealed he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
But he has bravely tackled the devastating diagnosis head on and today he tells us that he even feels “privileged” to have the incurable condition.
Lewis says that it has given him “certainty” to focus on life’s “important things” for the first time.
He is also not letting it get him down and he’s about to cycle 500 miles across the country to raise funds for an MND charity.
He’s an inspiration to all of us and we back him all the way in his efforts to find a cure for the horrific disease.
Rare talent
A football fan shocked passengers by cooking a steak sarnie on a train using hair straighteners.
He must like his meat done medium hair.
