Coronation Street’s Todd actor Gareth Pierce has shared that his ordeal his far from over following Theo’s murder
Coronation Street’s Gareth Pierce has opened up about what is next for Todd Grimshaw following his abusive husband Theo Silverton’s death.
Todd and Theo (James Cartwright) struck up a romance last year – and Todd fell head over heels for the scaffolder. However, Theo ended up manipulating and abusing Todd for several months in a bid to control every aspect of his life.
From force-feeding Todd and gaslighting him, to keeping him locked in the bedroom and isolating him from his loved ones, Theo’s abuse has been relentless and heartbreaking.
He even left Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) to perish in the Corriedale car crash earlier this year. However, last month Theo was finally exposed with the entire street turning on him. But with not enough evidence to charge him, Theo has been free to roam the cobbles.
And in Friday’s episode (May 1) it was revealed that Theo had been murdered and was the dead body first seen in February’s flashforward episode. The murder has sparked another soap whodunnit with next week’s episodes focused on the hunt to find the killer.
However, for Todd, the ordeal is far from over. In a recent Q&A, Todd actor Gareth spoke about how Todd is going to move on from Todd’s death.
When asked if viewers will see a different Todd going forward or if he can find some of his old personality again, Gareth said: “I think, even when speaking to people just day to day when I’m out, one of the more painful aspects of the story has been witnessing Todd’s spark really leaving him.
“It’s been very effective and painful, but I think that’s definitely something that the audience have said to me that they really do want to see, his playful side returning. So we’ll be hoping that we get Todd back to that place eventually.
“But I think, consistent with coming out of a relationship like this, it will take some time. I think that when Todd is feeling rubbish about himself, that’s when quite often he masks his vulnerability with a spikiness, a sarcasm and maybe a lack of patience for the people around him. Maybe we will see some of that returning in the immediate aftermath just as a method of self-protection.”
As for how he feels to have worked on the storyline on Corrie, Gareth shared: “I think that I’m the type of person who would have put a fair bit of pressure on myself when first asked to carry a storyline like this to do it justice and to do survivors justice and ensure that they feel seen in what goes out on screen.
“But now there is that sense that we’ve depicted it truthfully, and to hear how invested and on the journey our audience have been with us, then yeah absolutely I’m proud. I’m hugely proud of the work that every single member of this team has done and it really is credit to everybody’s dedication.”
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
