Actor Santosh K Nair has died following a car crash, with his wife Subhasree V. seriously injured and receiving hospital treatment, the tragedy comes just weeks after the release of his latest film
A veteran actor has tragically died in a horrific car crash aged 65, as his wife fights for his life in hospital.
The head-on smash also left Santosh K Nair and his wife Subhasree V. critically injured and fighting for her life in intensive care. The pair’s vehicle collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction. Bystanders raced to assist and emergency crews were forced to cut open the car to free them.
The couple, who have one daughter, Rajasree S. Nayar, were rushed to hospital where Santosh allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment. The lorry driver, who was also hurt in the collision, is expected to be questioned by police as officers suspect driver fatigue may have triggered the crash. The Motor Vehicles Department is also reportedly investigating the incident.
The star’s career stretched across more than four decades and the tragedy occurs just weeks after the April 10 release of Santosh’s latest film Bharathanatyam 2: Mohiniyattam, a sequel to the 2024 hit Bharathanatyam. The film is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on May 8. He had called it one of the finest roles of his career.
Despite attending university to study mathematics, the pull of acting proved irresistible and he eventually followed a career in performance.
His career kicked off in 1982 with the Malayalam film Ithu Njangalude Katha, helmed by P. G. Viswambharan, and he swiftly established himself as a beloved star in Malayalam cinema. A prolific and adaptable actor, he was renowned for his performances in villainous, leading, supporting, and comedic roles, appearing in over 100 films throughout his career spanning more than four decades, reports the Express.
Some of his most unforgettable parts were in films such as Vishnu Lokam, Irupatham Noottandu and Pinnilavu. He also found success on the small screen in shows like Swapnam and Sreekrishnan.
The star, who was politically active in his younger years, took a hiatus from acting in 2014 and only made a comeback to the screens in 2021.
He was recognised for his commitment to his roles, often executing physically challenging scenes and stunts, and occasionally sustained injuries during intense filming sessions.
However, he had previously voiced frustration about not always securing roles that he believed matched his abilities.
Santosh’s body will shortly be transferred to a government hospital for post-mortem, and a public viewing is anticipated to be organised for fans and members of the film industry to pay their final respects.
