WARNING – CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE: Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes was shocked when he was smacked by a phone during his St Louis concert, and fans were left furious

Rockstar Oli Sykes has been left with a “mild concussion” after being struck by a mobile phone during a live show.

The Bring Me The Horizon frontman was performing with the band at the Enterprise Centre in St. Louis, Missouri on Monday (May 11) when the scary incident took place. The Sheffield band are renowned for their rowdy shows, but Oli was gobsmacked when a phone came flying from the audience, just four tracks into the gig.

A stunned Oli was heard asking: “Who the f**k just threw a phone at my f*****g head?” before handing the device to security positioned at the front of the stage.

Despite the drama, the star soldiered on with the show for a crowd of 22,000, reports the Mirror. Nevertheless, the rockers – made up of Oli, Lee Malia, Matt Kean and Matt Nicholls – shortened their setlist from 17 to 16 tracks.

Oli has now turned to social media to update his followers. He posted: “Alright everyone – just wanted to let you know I’m all good. The phone to the head definitely smarted, and I ended up with a mild concussion, but the swelling’s gone down a decent amount already.

“Last night I was struggling a bit on stage afterwards because singing was putting a lot of pressure on the wound and making things feel a bit disorienting while performing, so I’m sorry on my part for what may of seemed like a half-hearted performance.

“Appreciate everyone checking in and worrying about me though. Everything should be fine for tonight’s gig. Oli xx.” Footage of the incident has since been shared widely on social media, with one TikTok user commenting: “Oli Sykes gets hit with a phone during Happy Song in St. Louis MO enterprise center. I can’t believe someone would do this!”

Another wrote: “What the hell? “Yeah, that’s really not cool,” vented a third. While a fourth added: “Literally and the fact that he felt like he needed to apologise for his performance after makes me so sad because he dead a** was assaulted.”

Yet another commented: “Ik [I know] for a fact it hurts from a shorter distance so I can’t imagine how bad it hurt him. But you could definitely tell he was in pain the rest of the concert.”

It comes just days after Oli explained why he frequently invites fans on stage to sing alongside him, following a similar experience he had as a teenager. Oli typically invites a fan on stage to perform ‘Antivist’ with him, usually halfway through the show.

In an interview with SiriusXM, he recalled how, as a teenager, he attended a gig by post-hardcore band Funeral For A Friend and managed to join them on stage after the lead vocalist fell ill. “The singer was really sick and he passed out halfway through the show,” Oli recounted.

He further stated: “They all left the stage and came back saying ‘We can’t play,’ I don’t know what I was thinking because I was the most shy kid, but I went, ‘I’ll sing’. They were like ‘What? OK…’ and they let me on stage! I sang a song, and it was the greatest moment of my life.”

Oli proceeded to describe how, even after all these years, he recalls the sensation of people approaching him following that unexpected incident. He added: “I think I cried after. My mum was waiting outside in the car, and I was like, ‘Mum, I just sang with Funeral For A Friend!’ It was so sick… so if we can do that for another kid, it’s just cool. And I get a break during the show too, which is great.”
