A lawyer has spoken of the terrifying scenes inside one of the worst prisons in the UK as inmates range form murders to war criminals resulting in the prison’s nickname ‘Monster Mansion’

Britain’s so-called “Monster Mansion” prison has earned its infamous nickname for the countless heinous criminals jailed behind the walls of the maximum security prison.

Marcus Johnstone, solicitor and managing director at PCD Solicitors, has pulled back the lid on what it’s really like inside HMP Wakefield. Nearly half of the convicts inside the prison have been handed life sentences for their foul crimes. And a shocking two-thirds of inmates inside are serving time for grotesque sexual offences, including Lostprophets paedophile Ian Watkins, who was stabbed to death inside the institution in October 2025.

The prison located in West Yorkshire has housed infamous prisoners such as killer doctor Harold Shipman, “Hannibal the Cannibal” serial killer Robert Maudsley, and war criminal Radislav Krstic. Speaking to the Sun, Johnstone said: “I have represented many serious offenders who have been locked up in Wakefield.

“Sexual offenders are segregated from non-sexual offenders, but they can still be targeted, attacked and killed by other sex offenders.”

The lawyer added that the prison was at “breaking point” as it had become stretched by a wider issue of violence within British prisons. Johnstone said: “I’ve seen just how bad these problems are first-hand.” Mass murderer Harold Shipman was an inmate at the prison prior to hanging himself in January 2004.

Johnstone recounted seeing the criminal “just chatting away” during a prison visit. He said that Shipman looked “exactly the same as you’d have seen him on TV.”

The ghoulish prison houses hundreds of single-occupancy cells with hard iron beds sprawled across the prison’s four main wings. The prison, which dates back as far as 1594, is one of ten Category A prisons in the UK. And those inside are deemed to be the most dangerous criminals in the UK.

On the conditions inside the prison, Johnstone said: “I’ve worked with serious offenders in prisons for over 20 years, and life inside for someone jailed for sex offences has never been good.

“However, in recent years, conditions have declined massively, and it’s no exaggeration to say that many prisoners at Wakefield now live their lives just waiting to be attacked.

“Although sex offenders will be separated from the wider prison population, there will always be an opportunity for a concerted attacker to gain access, when they are on the medical wing or moving around the prison for work or education.”

The Ministry of Justice previously commented on violence in British prisons and said: “To protect the public, prisons must always be a place of control and punishment, which is why this government took immediate action to reverse years of chaos and reduce the amount of violence behind bars.”
