Man killed dad’s dog with samurai sword on Christmas Day after being ‘offered cup of tea’

Boozed up Brian Coote, 37, has been jailed after he killed his dad’s dog with a samurai sword on Christmas Day in Westhoughton after flying into a fit of rage at being offered a cup of tea

A brute killed his elderly father’s dog with a samurai sword in a fit of rage on Christmas Day. Brian Coote, 37, has been jailed after also assaulting two police officers following his arrest.

Coote spent the previous night, Christmas Eve, drinking heavily. Upon waking up on Christmas Day, he was offered a cup of tea by his father, Alan. According to the police, he then ‘gripped his father by the arms’.

Alan and his ‘loyal and faithful companion’, his dog Max, escaped and climbed over a garden fence. Coote returned inside and retrieved the samurai swords his father had hidden from him.

He then slashed his father’s cherished pet three times. When Alan came back, he discovered Max dead behind the shed. The police were called to the scene, at Quakerfields in Westhoughton, and Coote was arrested, reports the Manchester Evening News.

After being taken into custody, he assaulted two police officers – one while detained and another by spitting in their face on the way to hospital.

Coote, of Quakerfields, admitted to assault causing grievous bodily harm; causing unnecessary suffering to an animal; assaulting an emergency worker; and common assault.

He was sentenced to three years and 11 months in prison when he appeared before a judge at Bolton Crown Court on Wednesday (May 13). He was also issued with a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting his father or visiting his house for 10 years.

In a statement released after the hearing, Sergeant Sarah Kirkman from Bolton’s Evidence Review Team, said: “The actions that Coote took towards his elderly father and his dog that he had rescued from an abusive home were nothing short of despicable.

“He turned what should have been a day of celebration into a nightmare, first by seriously injuring his father and then by causing catastrophic injuries to his loyal and faithful companion, Max, that he could never have survived.

“He then continued with his acts of violence by assaulting two police officers and a volunteer from the appropriate adult scheme, whose only role in the investigation was to provide support to Coote in custody.

“The sentence passed to him reflects how seriously Greater Manchester Police takes domestic abuse and animal cruelty, and assaults against its officers and staff.

“It takes a great deal of courage to provide evidence against a loved one and I would like to thank the victim for assisting with the investigation to make sure this case was brought to court.”
