The seventieth edition of the Eurovision Song Contest has taken place in Vienna, with XXX taking the glass trophy − all while the UK’s act Look Mum No Computer failed to impress

Bulgaria has won the seventieth edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna.

Twenty-five countries were in the running to win the glass trophy in tonight’s show (May 16), including the UK’s own Look Mum No Computer, whose real name is Sam Battle. But while his track failed to impress Europe, viewers were bowled over by Bulgaria.

The voting sequence saw Bulgaria dominate with the professional juries, with DARA scoring the famous ‘douze points’ several times. She also would go on to win the public vote, and was ultimately declared the winner with 516 points.

Over ten thousand fans gathered in the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna to watch the live final, with hundreds of British fans making the way over to support our act. Graham Norton was also back in the commentary booth to guide viewers through the spectacle.

However, there were several technical mishaps that caused issues throughout the course of the show. Acts from Czechia, Romania and Ukraine suffered various technical problems, impacting the show and their own performances − Czechia was unable to repeat their song despite a camera glitch.

This year’s Contest was marred in controversy following the inclusion of Israel after a meeting of broadcasters in December. The decision to allow Israel to remain in the competition triggered a boycott of five countries − including Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands.

The contest was also dogged with protests and demonstrations from those who wanted to have Israel from the Contest. Other countries have also signalled they would withdraw if Israel won, including Belgium.

Meanwhile, the UK continued its streak of poor results, with Look Mum No Computer failing to impress Europe with his zany stage show. At the close of voting, Sam finished in last place with just 1 point from the professional juries and 0 from the public vote.

Before the show, fans attending rehearsals had been split over the performance, with some fan websites admitting the staging was “messy”. Meanwhile, other fans were certain there was “controlled chaos” within the staging.

Speaking before his performance, Ramsgate-based Sam said: “It could go well or completely wrong − I’m just here for the ride.” He even said he would be willing to make some merch on the poor result: “It’s a really good t-shirt – ‘Look mum, no points’.”
