The Islamic festival of sacrifice, Eid al-Adha, will be observed by Muslims around the world this month – here’s everything you need to know including the exact date
Following the sighting of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia, the dates for Eid al-Adha 2026 have been confirmed. Hajj will commence on Monday, 25 May, while the Day of Arafah is set for Tuesday, 26 May.
Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on Wednesday, 27 May, reports Birmingham Live. Across the UK there are several events being held to commemorate the second Eid celebration.
From 11am to 5pm, at the Erdington retail park, there will be ‘independent brands, unique gifts, delicious treats and a welcoming atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy’. Down in London, a grand Eid on the Square in Trafalgar Square event is being planned.
The complimentary event will take place on Saturday, 30 May from 12pm to 6pm – marking the 20th anniversary since Eid has been celebrated in the Central London location.
The main stage will be hosted by Nadia Ali and Juwayria Ghazali, with art and craft workshops, food and retail stalls scattered throughout.
What is Eid Al-Adha?
Known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” Eid Al-Adha is the second of the two major Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year. It honors the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command.
Before the sacrifice could take place, God provided a lamb to be sacrificed instead.
How it is observed:
- The Qurbani: Families who can afford it sacrifice a livestock animal (usually a goat, sheep, or cow) and divide the meat into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives/friends, and one for the poor.
- Eid Prayers: The day begins with a special congregational prayer ( Salat al-Eid ) held in large fields or mosques.
- Hajj Connection: The holiday marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, specifically following the Day of Arafah.
