Ant and Dec revealed a twist was in store for the last live semi-final of the series

Britain’s Got Talent viewers have been left furious over a Golden Buzzer twist.

The very last live semi-final of the ITV series aired tonight (May 23), opening with a live performance from the cast of Matilda the musical before Ant and Dec took to the stage.

The Geordie presenting duo headed down to speak to the judges where they revealed a switch-up to how the Golden Buzzer would work. The judges have each had a chance to send a semi-final act straight to the live final with the button so far, but tonight things will work differently.

“You’ve all had a go now, so this week it’s going to be a group Golden Buzzer,” Ant explained to the judges. “How’s that gonna work Simon? Are you all gonna agree? Who’s gonna press it? Lots of questions.”

“Oh my God,” Alesha replied, as Amanda was left open-mouthed at the twist. Alesha was quick to point out: “We don’t agree on much.”

Responding to the dig, Simon replied: “We’re going to have to work out some kind of, like, sign thing or word,” as Alesha reiterated: “This is not going to be easy.”

The reveal came just minutes in to the programme, and viewers were quick to offer up their thoughts. One viewer questioned: “A Golden Buzzer from all of the judges tonight?”

Another ITV watcher added: “A ‘Group Golden Buzzer’ what the hell?” Meanwhile multiple show fans were furious that Ant and Dec weren’t included in the group buzzer.

“Why don’t Ant and Dec get a final golden buzzer?” lamented one. “Can’t Ant and Dec have a Golden Buzzer in the Semi Final?” another asked.

The Golden Buzzer has been a particularly contentious feature with viewers at home repeatedly criticising the device throughout the audition and live show stage, and even disagreeing with some of the acts the judges have – and have not – awarded it to.

Mr Cherry who performed during tonight’s semi-final received a Golden Buzzer from KSI at his initial audition. The comedy performer’s act included him opening wine bottles with his buttocks with KSI declaring it “the greatest thing I have ever seen,” though many at home disagreed.

One viewer stated: “Worst Golden Buzzer #BGT.” While another asked: “KSI HOW IS THAT GOLDEN BUZZER WORTHY???”

Britain’s Got Talent’s live 2026 final will air at at 7pm on Saturday, May 30.
