OPINION: As the long-awaited heatwave blazes across the country, you’ll be pleased to hear that there’s a brand new drink that could help you cool off on these long hot days

Red Bull have released a brand new special edition Cherry Sakura flavour and I got my hands on a can to try and combat my rising body temperature in this blistering heat. I tested it chilled while relaxing in the midday heat and was instantly intrigued by the unusual cherry blossom-inspired flavour.

Some people may be skeptical as to whether a floral twist would work in an energy drink, but it absolutely does. The cherry flavour hits straight away – tart, juicy and tastes a bit like cherry sweets without being sickly.

Then comes the sakura element, which gives the drink a noticeably light and fresh taste. I was anticipating a perfume-like aftertaste but Red Bull kept it subtle enough so that it doesn’t overpower the overall flavour.

There’s a slight almond or cherry Bakewell taste in the background and the combination results in a refreshing taste, making it a great drink as the warmer weather rolls around.

The sweetness level feels balanced and remains easy to drink from start to finish. The seasonal flavour is completely different from the usual editions and the eye-catching white, silver and red tones on the can’s design help it pop on the shelf.

Overall, I’d rate Red Bull’s Cherry Sakura as a huge success. It’s refreshing and unique but still with that distinct energy drink feel, so if you’re a fan of cherry flavours or just want to try something new then this one is worth a try.
