Pope Leo XIV stunned Vatican crowds by rushing to the aid of a holy man who collapsed in the baking Mediterranean sun. Dramatic images have beamed across the globe showing a huddle of suited security guards on the front rows of St. Peter’s Square following a weekly gathering on Wednesday.

But onlookers were left amazed when the Holy Father hurried down from his stage, dropping straight to his knees to check on the fallen priest.

The victim of the blistering heatwave was Father Diego Semeraro, 81, who had travelled to Rome from Puglia, southern Italy, alongside his brother, Father Franco.

The siblings were at the Vatican to celebrate Father Franco’s milestone 60th anniversary since his ordination, and had earlier gifted the Pope a photo album documenting the relics of Saint Augustine.

Recalling the moment the afternoon took a dramatic turn, Father Franco told Vatican News: “It was an extraordinary thing.”

As the brothers queued up to receive a traditional papal handshake at the end of the audience, Father Diego suddenly succumbed to the soaring temperatures.

Father Franco said: “After standing three hours in the sun, my brother felt faint, he fell quite badly, and now he’s a bit sore, but thank God he is fine now.”

The crowd watched in awe as the 81-year-old Pope beat his own security detail to the scene. Pope Leo “was the first to kneel down and go help him,” Father Franco said.

He revealed that his brother was left completely dazed by the encounter, waking up to see the leader of the Catholic church looking down at him. The confused priest reportedly said: “Your Holiness, is that really you?”

The Pope comfortingly shook his hand and gifted him a holy rosary before medical staff rushed the pensioner to a Vatican emergency room.

Doctors thankfully gave him the all-clear, and the tough priest was later spotted enjoying his lunch before leading a Mass.

It isn’t the first time Father Diego has made headlines at St. Peter’s Square. The veteran holy man was ordained on the exact same spot by Pope Paul VI back in 1970.
