Denver International Airport will spend up to $700m to turn its ‘creepy’ underground baggage tunnels, long plagued by lizard people rumours, into pedestrian walkways

A popular airport is set to open up its tunnels to the public after being plagued by wild rumours of underground “lizard people”. Denver International Airport has confirmed plans to transform its infamous subterranean baggage network into a walking route for passengers.

The creepy tunnels have long been the focus of bizarre conspiracy theories, with some people claiming they house everything from secret doomsday bunkers to hidden military bases. However, holidaymakers will soon be able to stroll right through them to get between concourses A, B and C, instead of piling onto the usual underground train system.

The airport’s unique reputation isn’t lost on local officials either. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston leaned into the eerie myths while discussing the project.

He said: “Maybe along the way, travellers will finally get a closer look at the underground tunnels and decide for themselves what’s fact and what’s fiction.”

Airport chiefs revealed the pedestrian walkways are part of their major “Vision 100” expansion scheme, designed to cope with skyrocketing passenger numbers, the New York Post reports.

Construction is slated to kick off in 2027, with the price tag estimated at a whopping $300million to $700million (£235m to £550m).

Thankfully for locals, it won’t cost them a penny. Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington told CBS News that the project will be funded entirely through airport revenue rather than taxpayer dollars.

The airport has been a magnet for paranormal claims ever since it opened in 1995 – a launch that was delayed by over a year and went billions over budget.

Aside from the creepy tunnels, internet sleuths have spent years obsessing over the airport’s apocalyptic artwork and “Blucifer” – a terrifying, towering blue mustang statue with glowing red eyes that stands guard outside.

The news has caused a stir online, with social media users cracking jokes about what passengers might encounter on their walk.

Over on Reddit, one user posted: “Be prepared to fight the lizard people along the way.” Another wrote: “Praise Blucifer.”

But while some joked about the underworld monsters, exhausted frequent flyers are just glad they won’t have to rely on the train. Another commenter added: “We’ve only been asking for this since before the airport opened.”
