Mis-Teeq have reunited for the first time in over two decades, performing on Britain’s Got Talent ahead of their Wembley Arena comeback show – fans have been left impressed
A beloved UK girl group has taken to the stage for a television performance, marking their first appearance together in decades as they gear up for a comeback gig at London’s Wembley Arena in the coming months.
Three-piece Mis-Teeq enjoyed a run of chart success in the early noughties – seven consecutive top ten hits in the UK, to be precise – alongside a series of chart entries in the US and Australia before they disbanded in 2005.
The girl group’s resident rapper Alesha Dixon carved out the most triumphant solo career following the split, releasing four studio albums and establishing herself as a reality TV judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
That’s precisely where the trio – comprising Dixon, Sabrina Washington and Su-Elise Nash – staged their reunion performance with a medley of some of their most celebrated tracks.
This week’s performance represented the first occasion the three band members had appeared together since 2004, ahead of their September comeback concert to showcase their collection of hits to a domestic audience celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of their debut album Lickin’ on Both Sides.
Their most successful track Scandalous even succeeded in penetrating the American music market, reaching number 11 on the US Billboard charts, aided by its inclusion on the Catwoman film soundtrack.
Shortly after Scandalous created a stir across the Atlantic, though, the band parted ways. They had formally confirmed their separation in early 2005 following the collapse of their record label Telstar Records.
The collapsed record company filed for bankruptcy proceedings shortly after signing an expat from the planet’s most successful girlband ever, the Spice Girls. Much of the responsibility for the record label’s downfall was attributed to Victoria Beckham, who had secured a massive advance to join the label. She released one single under Telstar Records before the company folded.
Initial responses to the reunion have been overwhelmingly positive, with supporters flocking to the comments section beneath online clips of their Britain’s Got Talent performance to express amazement at how unchanged the trio appear since launching their pop careers at the turn of the millennia.
One user said: “How do they all look even finer?” one fan asked. A second added: “”These 3 beautiful women are age 45-47! Wow, just wow, older women rock.” A third added: “They look exactly the same hardly aged!”
The comeback arrives as a surge of early-2000s girl groups return to the spotlight after decades in the wilderness, such as US chart-topping outfit the Pussycat Dolls, who recently made their first televised appearance in more than six years at the American Music Awards.
Now performing as a trio, the group is scheduled to embark on a UK and European tour later this year. However, their return to prominence has encountered several obstacles, with plans for a North American reunion tour cancelled entirely following disappointing ticket sales.
Meanwhile, Australian pop outfit Bardot – created during the inaugural series of the Aussie reality programme Popstars – have pressed on with their own resurgence through a performance at London’s Mighty Hoopla festival this weekend.
Earlier this year, the group reformed on stage at the debut Sydney edition of the festival, garnering an excited reaction from supporters during their first public appearance since dissolving in 2002.
Festival attendees in London were given an extended performance from the act, who secured a run of six straight top-20 singles in Australia between 2000 and 2002 before ultimately parting ways.
