A North Staffordshire pub has banned all football shirts and World Cup screenings over safety fears, as patriotic clampdowns spark fury across the UK
A British boozer has caused uproar after banning punters from sporting England shirts and national colours for the duration of the World Cup. Managers at The Jug, located in Newcastle-under-Lyme, insist they are “not against football” but have strictly confirmed they won’t be broadcasting a single second of the major tournament.
Taking things a step further, the North Staffordshire pub has implemented a blanket ban on all football jerseys and team gear, blaming “safety” concerns. Management dropped the bombshell rule on regulars just ahead of the Three Lions’ opening victory.
Posting to Facebook, the pub’s team said: “We are not a sports bar, and we will not be showing the football during the tournament.
“We absolutely wish all of the home nations and supporters well and we hope everyone enjoys the tournament safely and respectfully.
“However, from experience across the licensed trade and from national policing figures, football fixtures can unfortunately bring an increased risk of disorder, tension and avoidable incidents.
“Because of this, we have made the difficult decision that football shirts, national team tops, club tops and other football colours will not be permitted inside the pub until after the tournament. This applies to everyone equally, regardless of which team or country you support.”
The statement added: “Our priority is to keep the pub relaxed, welcoming, and safe for all customers and staff.
“We know this may disappoint some people, but we hope you understand that this decision has been made to prevent problems before they happen, not because we are against football or against any supporters.”
Thirsty football fans will have to wait until after the final on July 19 for the restrictions to be lifted.
The shock move comes as Brits face clampdowns on patriotic displays across the country. Just this week, Oxfordshire County Council sparked anger after launching a High Court bid to block residents from flying the St George’s flag near public highways.
