There was a change on the latest instalment of BBC Breakfast, with just one presenter on the sofa
A BBC Breakfast presenter fronted the latest programme solo following a shake-up.
The BBC show, which airs each morning, is usually presented by a duo, with combinations such as Jon Kay and Sally Nugent and Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt. Yet, as Monday’s edition (June 22) began, Jon was positioned outside No 10, while Sally remained alone in the studio.
Speaking to viewers, Jon revealed he was stationed at Downing Street amidst rumours that Prime Minister Keir Starmer might step down, reports the Mirror.
“Good morning, welcome to Breakfast with me, Jon Kay, live on Downing Street this morning amid growing signs that the Prime Minister could be set to resign,” he said.
“The widespread expectation within government and within the Labour Party is that we could hear Sir Keir Starmer setting out a timetable for his departure as early as this morning. His political rival, Andy Burnham, makes his return to Westminster today after his convincing victory in the Makerfield by-election.”
He continued: “Within the next few hours, things should become a little clearer about the future of the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer.
“On Friday, after Andy Burnham’s win in the Makerfield by-election, he said he was going to be hanging on. He said he would fight any attempts to depose him. He would stand in any leadership challenge.
“And yet, over the weekend, the language, the mood, the whispers have changed somewhat, and even Sir Keir Starmer’s closest allies are suggesting that maybe he will make a decision, setting out some sort of timetable about his plans in the next few hours.”
When the cameras switched back to the BBC Breakfast studio, Sally was the sole presenter on the sofa, delivering the remainder of the day’s news.
A number of viewers remarked on the change in format in posts on social media, with one person querying on X: “Are they standing outside Downing Street for the whole programme as well?”
“Good grief, this is getting ridiculous,” another person posted on the platform, formerly known as Twitter.
“All we need now is live helicopter coverage of the train carrying Andy Burnham on its dramatic journey from Manchester to Euston.”
BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am.
