Coronation Street’s Sarah Platt star Tina O’Brien has addressed her explosive ITV soap storyline

Coronation Street aired an explosive cliffhanger on Monday’s episode as Theo Silverton’s killer was finally revealed.

For weeks, Sarah Platt and Gary Windass have been acting suspiciously, with their partners – Kit Green and Maria Connor – suspecting the duo of an affair.

However, on Monday’s episode the truth was revealed during an explosive dinner party where a flashback revealed that Sarah had killed Theo in the whodunnit and Gary had helped cover it up.

During the flashback, it was revealed that Sarah had received a strange text from Todd Grimshaw, which caused her to dash to his flat, where Todd’s violent estranged husband Theo was lying in wait for her on the scaffolding with Todd’s phone which he had used to lure her there.

Fearing for Todd’s wellbeing, Sarah attempted to get answers as Theo deliberately tried to wind her up with vicious words and threatening behaviour.

A terrified Sarah shoved Theo aside before seizing a piece of scaffolding and striking him on the head, causing him to tumble off the edge of the scaffolding and crash to the ground below.

Sarah then dashed downstairs to check on Theo, discovering he was dead, Sarah called Gary and told him Theo was going to kill her, as he helped conceal the crime, instructing her to go and establish an alibi.

It then cut to present day, where Gary said he wishes he hadn’t picked up the phone to Sarah that night and she pleaded with him to keep their secret or she will end up behind bars.

The episode concluded with Gary saying he can’t keep her secret any longer as he could lose his marriage to Maria and contact with his family. It finished with Gary heading home and Sarah in a state of panic…

Talking about the explosive storyline and issuing an update on her soap future, Sarah star Tina O’Brien said: “There was a lot of debate in the green room as soon as we were told there was going to be a murderer. A lot of people were playing Cluedo, first off some of the cast got told that they were involved in the storyline, but they weren’t the murderer.

“So by the time it got to me to go for my meeting, I was a bit like, I think it’s me! But I genuinely didn’t worry, at the end of the day this job is incredible, but to be an actor is not necessarily a job for life. So, I just was really excited to be given the honour of being the murderer, and then hopefully, however it plays out, I’ll enjoy Sarah’s arc.”

She added over whether Sarah could go to prison: “Yeah, absolutely she could be going to prison this time. If she’d have called the police straight away and explained what happened, she would have been in a much better situation, because it was clearly not pre meditated, it was a situation where she felt she had no other choice. But to cover it up, to actively cover something up, she knows that she crossed a line that she can’t come back from.”

Talking about first receiving the script, she admitted: “I was really shocked, but for me, personally, I completely understand how it happened, why it happened. For me to get into her character and her head, I feel like, in that moment, she didn’t feel like she had any other choice.”
