Police and social services were alerted after drugs were discovered in a five-year-old pupil’s schoolbag at Glasgow Academy, a prestigious private school charging fees of up to £16,660 a year
Cocaine was discovered inside the schoolbag of a five-year-old girl at an upmarket Glasgow school.
Police and social services were called in following the incident at Glasgow Academy after staff uncovered the class-A substance. The independent school for children aged 3–18 demands parental fees of up to £16,660 annually.
The incident is understood to have occurred weeks ago but particulars are only now coming to light, according to the Scottish Daily Mail. A source said: “To say this has rocked everyone in the school is an understatement. The main concern is for the child. We dread to think what might have happened had the child accidentally tasted the substance or even shared it with others.
“The outcome could have been devastating. We all hope the school board and management team are taking the matter seriously.”
The institution operates three sites across Glasgow and ranks among Scotland’s highest-achieving private schools for SQA Higher Results, reports the Daily Record. The facility in the city’s Newlands district serves primary one to four students.
The Scottish Health Survey has disclosed that cocaine use among adults in the nation’s wealthiest regions has doubled within just two years, with statistics climbing from 2% in 2021 to 4% in 2023.
A spokesperson for Glasgow Academy said: “We do not comment on matters relating to individual children. Where any concern is raised, we act on it promptly and work closely with families and relevant authorities to keep every child in our care safe.”
Meanwhile, a three-year-old lad who was gravely injured after finding himself in a crocodile enclosure is no longer critical, the police have confirmed.
The boy was attacked by at least one crocodile following an incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, on Thursday. A 30-year-old man has been arrested and bailed by Cambridgeshire Police on suspicion of attempted murder after the boy was allegedly “thrown” into the enclosure.
A spokesperson for the force stated: “The boy is no longer critical and is in a stable condition in hospital.” The police were alerted to the incident at the zoo at 1.24pm on Thursday by the ambulance service, who reported that a three-year-old boy had sustained serious injuries.
Zoo staff pulled the boy from the enclosure, the police said. Tracey Johnson, the wife of the zoo owner, reportedly leapt into the enclosure to save him.
