BBC Breakfast viewers were left fuming during a live interview on the morning show

Viewers of BBC Breakfast were left unimpressed this week.

The popular morning show has recently concentrated much of its news reporting on the UK’s unprecedented heatwave.

Jon Kay was notably missing from the studio as he covered the soaring temperatures, while Sally Nugent remained on the famous red sofa. But one live interview left audiences feeling especially frustrated.

During Wednesday’s (June 24) programme, Jon chatted to Lauren Bennett from the RSPCA, who outlined how dogs can stay safe in the scorching weather.

“Just like people, [the heat] can be fatal [to a dog], which is why we tell people to change their behaviour because pets are completely under our control, so the responsibility is on us,” Lauren began to explain, reports the Mirror.

“In terms of symptoms, heavy breathing is the first thing that starts. [This then] progresses into vomiting, diarrhea, and very sadly, can cause seizures, collapse and death,” the guest continued, but some fans were soon left distracted.

As the interview carried on in Richmond upon Thames, some sharp-eyed viewers spotted a dog creating chaos in the background.

The dog was seen splashing about in the lake directly behind Jon and Lauren, before grabbing a duck in its mouth as it emerged from the water. The duck rapidly attempted to escape, with the dog dashing back into the water to chase it.

Viewers weren’t pleased that the owner had allowed their pet to run wild in the lake, with one person posting on Instagram: “Poor duck that’s really upsetting.”

Another added: “That’s awful. I’m shocked at how many people think this is funny? That poor duck!!”

A third said: “That poor duck… how is this going on behind this interview with no one doing anything about it. Absolute disgrace.”

A fourth viewer shared similar feelings, saying: “That is b***** disgusting,” with someone else writing: “That’s not funny, that’s absolutely outrageous.”

A Richmond resident named Vivi subsequently commented beneath the post, saying: “Our lovely duck Lupita is in a bad way, very injured and we will try to catch her and take her to vets. Her leg may be broken. Irresponsible owner of this dog is on my stories – we are trying to find out who she is to report her.”

The borough of Richmond’s official Instagram account later posted an update on Lupita the duck, writing: “We’re really pleased to share that, thanks to the incredible efforts of Richmond local @veevs, along with Mark Edwards OBE and James (@lsupco), Lupita has now been safely rescued and is receiving the care she needs to recover. It’s great news and a good reminder to keep dogs on leads.”
