Gregg Wallace has claimed celebrity pals stopped contacting him after his TV downfall, but says the experience helped him discover who his true friends really are

Gregg Wallace has claimed many of his famous friends disappeared after his television career came to an abrupt halt – but insists he is now happier than ever with his new life away from the spotlight.

The former MasterChef star opened up in a candid YouTube video, revealing the harsh lessons he learned after losing the career he spent 25 years building.

Reflecting on the fallout, Gregg admitted one of the biggest shocks was discovering that some of the people he thought were close friends stopped contacting him altogether. “The first thing is I didn’t have the friends I thought I had,” he said while preparing lunch in the video. “There’s so many people that I worked with over the years that I just didn’t hear from.”

Gregg suggested many of those who distanced themselves may have been worried about protecting their own careers.

“I suppose a lot of people who wanted to stay in TV didn’t want to damage their career by being associated with somebody that was creating headlines,” he explained.

Despite the disappointment, Gregg said a handful of loyal friends continued to support him throughout the difficult period, with some checking in on him every day.

“I very quickly found out who my friends really were,” he added.

The presenter also praised his wife Anna for standing by him during what he described as one of the toughest periods of his life.

Gregg revealed there were journalists camped outside their home for weeks and admitted he was deeply embarrassed by the constant media attention.

“I realised at that point just how strong my wife was,” he said. “I’m eternally grateful to her.”

The TV personality also spoke openly about the financial impact of losing his career, explaining that although he had savings, he suddenly found himself without a regular income.

He said he had to gradually cut back on expensive commitments, including leased cars, personal assistants and other costs that had built up during his years of success.

But despite the setbacks, Gregg insists he has successfully rebuilt his life. After gaining personal training qualifications and finding new income streams, he says he is now embracing a fresh chapter.

“The new life can be brilliant,” he said. “I am really enjoying this new one.”

While Gregg admitted he still feels nervous in large crowds and worries that people are judging him, he believes the experience has given him a new perspective.
