Brooke George, 23, was arrested in Dubai on Monday and charged with the murder of a man she claims she killed in self-defence after he attacked her

The 23 year old British woman facing execution by firing squad in Dubai has yet to speak with a lawyer five days following her arrest, according to a human rights organisation.

Brooke George, from Gravesend, Kent, was arrested on Monday (22 June) and has been charged with the murder of a man she began a relationship with after meeting him online. She is currently detained at the infamous Bur Dubai Police Station where she is being interrogated by police – however, the TikToker has not yet had access to legal counsel or a translator.

George had previously journeyed to Dubai – a city in the United Arab Emirates known for its stringent legal system and severe penalties – to meet a man she encountered on Facebook.

According to the campaign group Detained in Dubai, she had the ‘time of her life’ during her initial visit, but alleges that the 26-year-old man she was dating became “increasingly controlling and abusive” upon her return.

The former John Lewis worker claimed that he attacked her following a night out in Jumeirah Village, leading her to book a flight back to the UK. Upon returning to the flat to retrieve her passport, George claims she was “punched hard in the face and attacked”, which left her “fearing for her life”.

In the midst of the chaos, she grabbed a kitchen knife and “acted in self defence”, according to Detained in Dubai. The “bruised and battered” Brit then tried to exit the UAE but was apprehended at the airport and arrested, subsequently being charged with premeditated murder.

If found guilty, she could face execution, potentially by firing squad. Detained in Dubai, who have been supporting George since her arrest, expressed their “grave concern” for the young woman.

Radha Stirling, the chief executive of the organisation, has cautioned that each day the 23-year-old goes without legal counsel “places her at an even greater disadvantage”.

Speaking to The Sun, she described George’s case as “deeply personal” to her, saying: “Knowing Brooke is facing a charge that carries the death penalty, I cannot overstate how concerned I am for her.

“Brooke is just 23-years-old. Only days ago she experienced what she describes as a terrifying and traumatic ordeal.

“Instead of receiving the legal and psychological support that would ordinarily be available to a young woman claiming she acted in self defence after alleged abuse, she remains without proper access to legal representation.”

Detained in Dubai claimed that George was forced to strip naked in front of male officers at the Bur Dubai Police Station, an experience she described as “deeply humiliating and distressing”.
