Man Utd news: Major transfer U-turn planned as England star offered lifeline

Manchester United are in the market for new signings this summer and there could be a change in how they approach deals, with Marcus Rashford transfer news also dominating the Old Trafford agenda

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick isn’t having much luck with summer transfers despite the window now being in full swing. However, there might be a shift in their strategy for conducting business.

United will feature in the Champions League throughout the forthcoming season, marking Carrick’s inaugural complete campaign as permanent manager. One signing has already been confirmed, with Brazilian midfielder Ederson poised to join this month following Casemiro’s exit.

A player whose destiny remains less clear is Marcus Rashford. Presently shining for England at the 2026 World Cup, Rashford’s future is uncertain after his loan spell at Barcelona concluded without the £26million purchase option being triggered and Anthony Gordon was recruited for nearly three times the price instead.

However, fresh reports indicate Rashford might be presented with a pathway back into United’s first-team under Carrick, though an arrangement has been reached. Following Barcelona’s decision to secure former Newcastle star Gordon rather than Rashford, it remains unclear where the winger will ply his trade during the coming club campaign.

It was chiefly under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim that Rashford found himself ostracised, and new gaffer Carrick was actually Rashford’s teammate for several years. Reports indicate he might shortly be presented with a route back into the first team at Carrington.

The Daily Mail reports that while it’s certainly possible Rashford could turn out for his childhood club again following discussions, both United and the player concur they’d prefer it not come to that.

Rashford has proven his mettle at the World Cup for England, netting in their initial group-stage victory over Croatia and appearing sprightly on the left flank. Gordon, on the other hand, has found it tough to make a mark.

In other news, The Sun suggests that United may soon alter their strategy towards recruiting seasoned Premier League players due to a significant surge in asking prices. Carrick’s team had been associated with recently demoted West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but reportedly baulked at his £80m valuation, with Tottenham agreeing an £85m deal instead.

Manchester City’s record-breaking £116m agreement to sign Elliot Anderson, anticipated to be finalised shortly, is another element prompting this shift in approach, with top-tier players now commanding sky-high fees.

Instead, United are believed to be keen to focus on more cost-effective, unpolished prospects, with other targets such as Alex Scott and Adam Wharton also priced at a staggering £80m.
