Zak Forsyth, 21, from Liverpool is currently in a coma in Thailand after a serious scooter collision, with his family racing to raise £30,000 for surgery that could save his life as he had no travel insurance

The family of a British man battling for his life in Thailand have provided a fresh update on his condition. According to his partner Amy Elkin, Zak Forsyth was stone-cold sober and travelling on a scooter when it smashed into a car earlier this week.

The motorist rushed him to hospital, but Zak has sustained potentially life-threatening injuries. The 21-year-old is currently in a coma, and with no medical or travel insurance, his family have been told they need to pay for all hospital bills and treatment expenses.

Fighting back tears, Amy, 21, who currently remains in Huyton, Merseyside said: “The police came and knocked on our door. So he must have had some ID on him which the British embassy had looked at.”

“He was coming back from somewhere. His friends didn’t even know about it. He’s got a bleed on the brain, a broken nose, a broken jaw, broken ankle and broken arm.”

In an update on Sunday (February 8), Amy confirmed that Zak is still waiting to undergo emergency surgery and currently remains in intensive care. She revealed they now require £30,000 purely for his operation, according to the Liverpool Echo.

On the JustGiving page, Amy pleaded: “Every little will help us. Thanks to everyone who’s helped so far. Get my boy home.”

Amy has secured an emergency passport to jet out to Thailand, but she and the family are desperate to get Zak back to Merseyside at the earliest opportunity. When the Liverpool Echo highlighted the fundraising campaign last night, donations had reached over £9,000.

That sum has now soared to just under £23,000 at the time of writing. This means the family are roughly three quarters of the way towards achieving their £30,000 goal.

Numerous heartfelt messages have poured in from well-wishers since the story broke. Hayley Eaton wrote: “Liverpool is an amazing city the way people come together to help and support their children.

“Keep sharing and donating to save Zak’s life, it’s every parent’s nightmare. I’m praying for a miracle for his family.” Michaela McMahon urged: “Come on guys, let’s donate and get him home.”

Joyce Rice commented: “Praying for him. Hope they can get him seen and then home as soon as possible.”

Sue Dyson wrote: “So sad. Praying for a full recovery.” Jayne Singleton added: “I’m praying for you young man. Keep fighting, you can do it.”
