Need to know
The Met Gala is an invite-only annual event and despite the star-studded guest list, there are simply no exceptions to Anna Wintour’s extremely strict rules and regulations
Read on for all the information you need about the Met Gala’s five very important rules
- No phones: In 2015 a notice read: “The use of phones for photography and social media will not be permitted inside the gala.” However, many celebs take the opportunity to snap a quick selfie in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s bathroom.
- No smoking: New York City’s Smoke-Free Air Act prohibits smoking at the event and this was enforced further in 2018 after celebrities shared pictures of themselves smoking in the bathroom. The museum promised they would “take steps to ensure this does not happen again”.
- Do not touch the art: Curator Andrew Bolton once answered the question of “What would get someone banned from the gala?” by replying: “Smoking. Smoking in the galleries. Touching the artwork. Those would be no- nos.” This is also a general rule for almost every museum or gallery.
- No attendees under 18: Organisers told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that the Met Gala is “not an appropriate event for people under 18.”
- Speak to Anna Wintour for only 20 seconds: According to Anna: The Biography by Amy Odell, each guest has just 20 seconds to speak with Anna at the top of the iconic Met Gala stairs, a rule enforced to maintain efficiency and to keep the schedule on track.
