Mad Max star Kjell Nilsson has died aged 76 after a four-year battle with kidney disease. The actor, best known as villain Lord Humungus, passed away surrounded by family
Mad Max star Kjell Nilsson has died aged 76 after a four-year battle with kidney disease, his representative has confirmed.
The Swedish-born actor, who became a cult favourite for playing the fearsome Lord Humungus in the 1981 classic Mad Max 2 – released in the US as The Road Warrior – died on Thursday in Queensland, Australia. His representative, Chris Carbaugh, confirmed to TMZ that Kjell passed away surrounded by his family following a four-year battle with kidney disease.
Before finding fame on the big screen, Kjell enjoyed an impressive career as an Olympic-class weightlifter. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, he moved to Australia in 1980 to train Swedish athletes ahead of the Moscow Olympic Games. It was there he met actress Kate Ferguson, whom he later married in Sweden.
Kate encouraged Kjell to return to Australia and pursue a career in acting – a decision that would land him his most iconic role.
In Mad Max 2, Kjell played the unforgettable villain Lord Humungus, the imposing masked leader of a gang of marauders terrorising the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
His commanding performance helped cement the character as one of the franchise’s most memorable antagonists.
Film critic Richard Corliss of Time famously praised the performance, writing that “malevolence courses through his huge pectorals, pulses visibly under his bald, sutured scalp.”
Although best remembered for Mad Max, Kjell also appeared in several other film and television productions throughout the 1980s.

Although best remembered for Mad Max, Kjell also appeared in several other film and television productions throughout the 1980s.
He starred in The Pirate Movie in 1982 alongside Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol before appearing in the 1984 TV movie Man of Letters and later The Edge of Power in 1987.
Despite those roles, it was Lord Humungus that remained closest to fans’ hearts.
Paying tribute, his representative Chris Carbaugh described Kjell as “a wonderful person” who inspired countless people through his work as a weight-training coach.
Chris added that the actor “loved the Mad Max fans and embraced the role” that made him famous.
Away from acting, Kjell continued to dedicate much of his life to fitness, coaching and mentoring others using the knowledge he had gained during his years as an elite weightlifter.
His portrayal of the masked wasteland tyrant has endured for more than four decades, with Mad Max fans continuing to celebrate the character at conventions and screenings around the world.
Kjell leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the most recognisable villains in cult movie history.
