Gary Neville was back to his shrieking best as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s colossal error cost Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Rayan Cherki had weaved in and out of the Arsenal defence to send the eight-time Premier League champions into the lead. However, the sublime turned into the stupid as seconds later Donnarumma hung onto the ball for too long, allowing an onrushing Kai Havertz to deflect the ball into the net.

And that moment of madness was soundtracked by Gary Neville’s loud shriek. “That is an all timer Gary Neville noise, nobody does it like him,” one fan joked on X.

“Gary Neville got far too excited about that equaliser,” a second said. As a third replied: “All timer Gary Neville noise that, can’t quite believe how good it is…”

“That’s firmly exceeded the Gary Neville ‘ooo’ scale,” a fourth shared. While a fifth posted: “Whatever happens we managed to bring back the Gary Neville sex noise!”

And another added: “Gary Neville standing on some Lego and Donnarumma making that howler at the same time. What were the chances!”

Neville has a history of “goalgasms”, with his most famous coming when Fernando Torres netted a late strike against Barcelona in the Champions League to set up an all English final for the Blues against Manchester United.

Alan Parry later blamed Neville for ruining his “moment of fame”. Parry had been hoping to emulate the Kenneth Wolstenholme’s “they think it’s all over, it is now”.

He told The Times: “So I thought, well, maybe, with Torres, this was my moment. And Gary bloody Neville spoilt my moment of fame!”

Parry added: “I said, ‘Gary, I’m Alan Parry. I know you hate Scousers. I’m not fond of the Mancs either. But we’ve got to work together, so shake hands’. And then he goes and ruins my moment of fame. It’s like he was getting strangled.

“He knows his stuff, of course he does. But I think he forgets that he’s got the microphone in his hand.

“And if you’re going to express some emotion, just lift the microphone away from you. It was such an unnatural sound, wasn’t it?”
