Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he has held talks about becoming the new Germany national team manager
Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed he has entered discussions to become the new manager of the Germany national side. Germany are seeking a new manager following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure, whose exit was announced after the nation’s elimination from the World Cup.
Nagelsmann had steered Germany to the round of 32 at the World Cup, before losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout and failing to secure the opportunity to meet France in the last-16.
Klopp has been cautiously linked with a return to management ever since his exit from Liverpool in 2024, where he has subsequently been serving as the head of global football for Red Bull.
The 59-year-old has now revealed that the German Football Association (DFB) have already begun discussions with him about becoming the nation’s new manager, and explained why he hopes his currently employers, Red Bull, do not prevent a move.

“Yes, I can confirm the talks,” Klopp said on Magenta TV, where he is currently working as a pundit for the 2026 World Cup.
“Things moved along quite quickly. Julian [Nagelsmann] has resigned and the DFB is working on a successor. And in the course of these considerations, they approached me.
Klopp added: “I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I’ve said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I usually honour contracts. But I’ve also made it clear that I’m interested in talks with the DFB.
“I need to talk to Oliver Mintzlaff. He’s my employer. We’ve already discussed things. I assume he won’t stand in my way. I was there for 19 months. It was an intense time. Ideally, everyone wins in the end. Red Bull needs to come out of this clean.”
Klopp also revealed that he is “ready” to return to football management following a two-year break from the touchline.
“I’m more than ready now, so I’m prepared,” Klopp said.
The DFB had already announced earlier this week that they had expressed an interest in naming Klopp as the new Germany manager.
“Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp,” part of a statement read, which also confirmed Nagelsmann’s departure. “He [Klopp] has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position.”
